Once again, Robert Downey Jr proves what an amazing, warmhearted person he is! On Monday, April 29th, he surprised teenage aid workers who were being treated to a special screening of Iron Man 3 in New York. The teenagers were there after devoting their time to help cleanup and rebuild after last year’s Hurricane Sandy. Check out some more details from the appearance below, including why it was important for him to show gratitude regarding NYC in particular:
The actor made an unannounced visit to the Regal E-Walk theater in Manhattan to honor youngsters from the Police Athletic League who have given their time to help rebuild areas devastated by the storm last October.
The teens cheered with delight when Downey, Jr. entered the building, and he personally thanked them for their hard work. He told the crowd, “I just want to say thank you to the… Police Athletic League and all of you folks. I know you’re all here because you’ve been doing something special in the five boroughs, for this great city. You’re the future of the nation. I guarantee if you keep doing the right thing, you’re going to be running the joint in a minute.”
Downey, Jr. posed for photos with his star-struck fans, and told a reporter for the New York Daily News, “Of course [the visit means a lot as]… it’s my hometown. Everywhere we drive, I have a memory of playing Frisbee in front of that office building or trying to sneak into the back door of a Rocky Horror Picture Show midnight showing, because I knew someone who was working concessions… Coming back here reminds me of my origins.”
On Friday, April 26th, Robert Downey Jr appeared on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.” In the interview, he talks a bit about his birthday (and there’s a clip of him doing Gangnam Style in South Korea), his Oscar potential, breaking his ankle on the Iron Man 3 set, and he names his guilty pleasure snack. You can check out some pictures from the show in the gallery, or check out the entire episode below (he shows up around 16:50).
On April 24th, Robert Downey Jr attended the Los Angeles premiere for Iron Man 3. Susan Downey accompanied Robert throughout the evening, and they looked gorgeous – and adorable – in matching outfits; Susan’s bright orange dress was reflected in Robert’s pocket square and even his tangerine sunglasses. Co-stars at the premiere included Gwyneth Paltrow, Sir Ben Kingsley, Rebecca Hall, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Jon Favreau, director Shane Black, and veritable comic book god, Stan Lee himself.
Held at Disney’s El Capitan Theatre, it was an extravagant event, bringing in other Marvel stars such as Jaimie Alexander, Kat Denings, Emily VanCamp, Cobie Smulders, Hayley Atwell, Zachary Levi, Joss Whedon (director of The Avengers), Sebastian Stan, and Chris Hemsworth. There are over 300 pictures from the LA premiere in the gallery, with a few after-party images as well.
Earlier today, April 18th, Robert Downey Jr – looking sharp in a double-breasted jacket – finally made it to the London premiere of Iron Man 3. (This, after the event was delayed for Margaret Thatcher’s funeral.) He was joined by wife Susan, and they both seemed to enjoy their time on the red carpet as they donned and posed with adorable knitted hand repulsors. They were joined by Don Cheadle, Sir Ben Kingsley, Rebecca Hall, screenwriter Drew Pearce, and director Shane Black.
On April 17th, Robert Downey Jr attended the London photo call for Iron Man 3. There, he was joined alongside costar Gwyneth Paltrow and showed off their friendship in front of photographers. Immediately following the photo call, Robert and Gwyneth joined Don Cheadle, Sir Ben Kingsley, Rebecca Hall, screenwriter Drew Pearce, and director Shane Black for a press conference. You can watch a video of that below:
Earlier today, April 14th, Robert Downey Jr attended the Paris premiere for his upcoming film, Iron Man 3. He spent a very long time on the red carpet, mingling and meeting with French fans showing their support. Afterwards, he joined co-star Gwyneth Paltrow for a brief photo call. You can also check out a video of the Paris press conference right here.
Robert Downey Jr is known for his eclectic fashion taste, but he really surprised fans at April 12th‘s Iron Man 3 photo call. While in Munich to promote the film, Robert donned Lederhosen in honor of his mom. According to this article, he stated, “I’m wearing the Lederhosen today in honor of the 79th birthday of my mother Elsie, which was yesterday. She has German ancestors.” (Happy Belated Birthday, Elsie!)
Robert’s co-star, Gwnyeth Paltrow (who plays the beloved Pepper Potts in the Iron Man franchise) was also at the event. Check out a couple of videos below, including one of Robert dancing Bavarian Style:
On April 10th, after their photo call in Moscow, Robert Downey Jr and Iron Man 3 co-star Sir Ben Kingsley joined forces again — this time, for a press conference. A few images of the event have been added to the gallery. You can also watch the entire interview courtesy of Marvel Russia; however, it is all dubbed in Russian, so you might just want to give it a watch for the visuals if you don’t happen to know the language.
Following his stop in China, Robert Downey Jr headed to Moscow, Russia for his next run of Iron Man 3 promo. There, he met up with co-star Sir Ben Kingsley, who is portraying The Mandarin in the film. After a surprise visit at a fan convention on April 10th, RDJ joined Kingsley for a photo call — and seemed to make the most of it. The two were seen clowning around with one another, throwing (and taking) fake punches for the cameras; you can catch a short video of their antics here.
Ever the king of surprise appearances, Robert Downey Jr left many Russian fans very happy on April 10th. During a convention at the October Multiplex in Moscow, he stopped by to pay an unannounced visit. Photos of Robert at the event have been added to the gallery, but you can also check a couple extras on E!’s site — including a stunning image of the entire crowd donning Iron Man masks. Creepy, but cool!
