In a pre-Cannes move, Robert Downey Jr. has reteamed with Iron Man director Jon Favreau on the indie ensemble comedy Chef, with production starting July 8th in Los Angeles.
Aldamisa will present the project at Cannes next week and has already begun selling international markets.
Favreau, Karen Gilchrist, and Aldamisa co-chairman Sergei Bespalov are producing. Favreau is directing from his own script and starring as a man who loses his chef job and starts up a food truck to reclaim his artistic promise and reclaiming his estranged family. Sofia Vergara, John Leguizamo, and Bobby Cannavale are also starring. [ETA: Scarlet Johansson has also jumped on board.]
“Setting a film in the culinary world of Los Angeles offers wonderful opportunities for a character driven comedy,” said Favreau.
To highlight the impending U.S. release of Iron Man 3, Robert Downey Jr hit the New York Stock Exchange to ring the opening bell earlier today, April 30th. Marvel definitely has something worth celebrating, too: Iron Man 3 grossed $195 million from the overseas market over the weekend alone. That’s a bigger opening weekend than last year’s blockbuster, The Avengers! Congrats, Robert and the whole IM3 team! Here’s to another box office smashing weekend, this time in the States.
On April 24th, Robert Downey Jr attended the Los Angeles premiere for Iron Man 3. Susan Downey accompanied Robert throughout the evening, and they looked gorgeous – and adorable – in matching outfits; Susan’s bright orange dress was reflected in Robert’s pocket square and even his tangerine sunglasses. Co-stars at the premiere included Gwyneth Paltrow, Sir Ben Kingsley, Rebecca Hall, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Jon Favreau, director Shane Black, and veritable comic book god, Stan Lee himself.
Held at Disney’s El Capitan Theatre, it was an extravagant event, bringing in other Marvel stars such as Jaimie Alexander, Kat Denings, Emily VanCamp, Cobie Smulders, Hayley Atwell, Zachary Levi, Joss Whedon (director of The Avengers), Sebastian Stan, and Chris Hemsworth. There are over 300 pictures from the LA premiere in the gallery, with a few after-party images as well.
Earlier today, April 18th, Robert Downey Jr – looking sharp in a double-breasted jacket – finally made it to the London premiere of Iron Man 3. (This, after the event was delayed for Margaret Thatcher’s funeral.) He was joined by wife Susan, and they both seemed to enjoy their time on the red carpet as they donned and posed with adorable knitted hand repulsors. They were joined by Don Cheadle, Sir Ben Kingsley, Rebecca Hall, screenwriter Drew Pearce, and director Shane Black.
On April 17th, Robert Downey Jr attended the London photo call for Iron Man 3. There, he was joined alongside costar Gwyneth Paltrow and showed off their friendship in front of photographers. Immediately following the photo call, Robert and Gwyneth joined Don Cheadle, Sir Ben Kingsley, Rebecca Hall, screenwriter Drew Pearce, and director Shane Black for a press conference. You can watch a video of that below:
Earlier today, April 14th, Robert Downey Jr attended the Paris premiere for his upcoming film, Iron Man 3. He spent a very long time on the red carpet, mingling and meeting with French fans showing their support. Afterwards, he joined co-star Gwyneth Paltrow for a brief photo call. You can also check out a video of the Paris press conference right here.
Robert Downey Jr is known for his eclectic fashion taste, but he really surprised fans at April 12th‘s Iron Man 3 photo call. While in Munich to promote the film, Robert donned Lederhosen in honor of his mom. According to this article, he stated, “I’m wearing the Lederhosen today in honor of the 79th birthday of my mother Elsie, which was yesterday. She has German ancestors.” (Happy Belated Birthday, Elsie!)
Robert’s co-star, Gwnyeth Paltrow (who plays the beloved Pepper Potts in the Iron Man franchise) was also at the event. Check out a couple of videos below, including one of Robert dancing Bavarian Style:
Disney has pushed back the U.K. premiere of Iron Man 3 by a day to allow for the funeral for the former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher.
The studio has moved the premiere, scheduled for April 17, the date of Thatcher’s funeral, to April 18 in order to avoid the anticipated fallout from an event that will include a lengthy procession from the Houses of Parliament in central London to St Paul’s Cathedral.
The film’s stars Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow are still rostered to be in town to stroll the red carpet outside the cinema in Leicester Square in London.
Iron Man 3 is scheduled to rollout across the U.K. from April 26.
