‘The Avengers’ Smashes Box Office Records, Guarantees Sequel

After shattering box office records and debuting with the highest opening weekend gross ($207 million in the U.S. alone), The Avengers has been given the “go” for a sequel. This, according to Disney CEO, Bob Iger.

It’s probably a no-brainer, but a sequel to The Avengers was made official Tuesday by Disney CEO Bob Iger, who made the announcement during a conference call with analysts to discuss quarterly earnings.

Repeating previous announcements made by Marvel Studios, Iger said a third Iron Man and a second Thor are scheduled for 2013 and a sequel to Captain America: The First Avenger is in the works for 2014. He gave no timeline for an Avengers sequel.

Iger boasted that Avengers “shattered domestic box-office records with a $207.1 million opening weekend for a global performance of more than $702 million to date.”

The CEO also said that there are Avengers-based attractions in the works for some of Disney’s theme parks.

Robert Presents at the 84th Annual Academy Awards

Robert Downey Jr. presented Best Documentary at the 2012 Oscars earlier this evening, complete with some fun banter with Iron Man co-star, Gwyneth Paltrow. Onstage, Robert pretended to be part of a documentary and upped the arrogance for laughs. You can watch a video at this Tumblr. In the meantime, check out some backstage anecdotes before he presented his award category:

6:28 p.m. — Robert Downey Jr. chewed away on his gum and danced along to the music as he waited in the wings to present an award during the Oscar show’s Cirque du Soleil performance. When his cue came he quickly deposited the gum in a napkin and stepped on stage.

6:42 p.m. — Stage manager Dency Nelson has discovered Downey’s discarded gum. “Robert Downey Jr. chewing gum! We could sell it on eBay,” Nelson jokes before tossing it in the trash.

6:50 p.m. — Wait a minute, this isn’t a beauty contest. “How do you feel about relinquishing your title?” Robert Downey Jr. asks last year’s supporting actress winner Melissa Leo after Octavia Spencer wins this year’s award. “Oh, I’m not,” she says. “”I thought you had to give them yours,” Downey replies.” I don’t know how this works.”

‘Perry Mason’ Reboot Lands a Writer

Screenwriter Marc Guggenheim (Green Lantern, “Law & Order”) has been offered to pen the script for Team Downey’s upcoming reboot, Perry Mason; he is currently in negotiations. Robert Downey Jr and wife Susan will produce the film for Warner Brothers. Courtesy of Hollywood Reporter, he’s a summary of what to expect with the new film:

Mason is a defense attorney character at the center of a series of books by Erle Stanley Gardner that were first adapted as films and radio plays in the 1930s. The books were hugely popular but the character’s appeal reached new heights with the TV series that starred Raymond Burr and ran from 1957 to 1966.

Guggenheim is writing a script based off an original story by Downey and Team Downey president David Gambino, bringing the character back to Los Angeles of the 1930s.

Only one picture from tonight’s Golden Globe Awards have surfaced featuring Robert Downey Jr: when he was announcing the black and white feature film, The Artist, as a contender for Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical. Unfortunately, it looks like neither he nor Susan walked the red carpet this evening. If a video of his announcement appears – or more pictures become available – I’ll share them ASAP.

Robert Confirms Interest in ‘Pinocchio’

When talking to Omelete, Robert Downey Jr. confirmed his interest in the upcoming film, Pinocchio, to (hopefully) be directed by Tim Burton. You can check out a video of the brief interview in the link above (where he also talks about Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows and Iron Man 3), or just read a couple of highlighted bits below:

On Pinocchio: “I want to talk to him about it, yeah! C’mon, it’s Tim Burton.”

On Iron Man 3: “I think that we have an opportunity with the third Iron Man to make the best of the three, and maybe one of the better superhero movies that’s ever been made. But I think we have to remember what made the first one good. It was very character-driven. It was very odd. It was kind of outrageous. And so I think we have to have the courage to trust that the audience is really kind of cool, and smart.”
