Robert Downey Jr. Wants to be a Criminal ‘Master Mind’

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

It’s not too hard to find some super-sympathetic villains right now. You can travel the Internet waves and check out Dr. Horrible, or head to toon town and watch The Monarch and the other Guild of Calamitous Intent members in Venture Brothers. You can see dudes sending in applications to the evil organizations, bad guys storm the wrong building, and even crappy reassignments that suck one’s loathing hatred out of their job. These incarnations are great, addictive pieces of fun.

Could the same be said of Ben Stiller’s forays into the fold? (*cough* Mystery Men) Not really. But would it help with Robert Downey Jr. and Tina Fey? Entertainment Weekly posts that both actors are looking into joining Stiller’s animated villain film, Master Mind. (Christopher blogged about it here, last year.) The premise is simple. A villain accidentally kills the guy he’s arching, and loses his will to live. (more…)

Robert Downey Jr.’s risky role in Tropic Thunder

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008
When Robert Downey Jr. put on dark make-up for film comedy Tropic Thunder, the actor ventured into the racially charged territory of blackface, an old showbiz convention that is no laughing matter
Downey said he initially worried that his portrayal of a white actor playing a black man could hurt his career and he bristled at being given what he thought would be the most controversial role in the film directed by Ben Stiller.
But so far, Tropic Thunder, which opened last Wednesday, has generated no backlash against the 43-year-old star of Iron Man.Hollywood’s history with blackface, a style of wearing wigs and makeup to caricature slaves or ex-slaves in the 19th and early 20th centuries, dates to the start of the movie industry but has largely stopped except in cases of satire and comedy.
Downey told reporters in recent interviews that his role was a satirical send-up of actor narcissism, and different from older uses of blackface that reinforced harmful stereotypes. “It’s entertainment that’s set up by people who are high-minded enough to not be racist or offensive,” he said. Access Exclusive First Look: Deleted ‘Iron Man’ Scene

Friday, August 15th, 2008

Iron Man’ doesn’t blast his way onto DVD for another month, but Access Hollywood has an exclusive first look at a deleted scene of the armored hero’s alter-ego, Tony Stark, in action.

Before taking down terrorists in the Middle East, Tony, played by Robert Downey Jr., sets up his cover story at a party in Dubai with a little help from his friends – and in true Tony Stark style, his friends are four lovely ladies.

“It was really fun. We were all night shooting too,” Robert told Access. “It’s hard to look glamorous at three in the morning.”

Unfortunately before Tony can enjoy the company of his friends, duty calls for Iron Man, and he’s off to fight a few terrorists.

In a treat for hip hop fans, Tony Stark meets “Tony Starks,” better known as Ghostface Killah from the rap group The Wu-Tang Clan, who makes a cameo in the deleted scene as a party guest.

Ghostface is a longtime fan of the hero, often going by the alias “Tony Starks,” and releasing an album titled “Ironman” in 1996.
