Robert Downey Jr. has dropped out of Cowboys & Aliens, the Dreamworks/Universal sci-fi project that would have reunited the actor with his Iron Man director Jon Favreau. The news was first reported by the Los Angeles Times but only speculated on why Downey had left the project, which pits Old West cowboys and indians against a group of aliens with superior technology. Now, a source inside the production tells EW.com that the star has a scheduling conflict with a Sherlock Holmes sequel. That film has not yet been greenlit by Warner Bros., but it is being fast-tracked based on the success of the first film. (Sherlock’s worldwide gross is fast approaching $300 million.) Warner Bros. commissioned a script by Kieran and Michele Mulroney back in September and is now locking down the cast for a June start date, exactly the time when Cowboys & Aliens is set to begin principal photography. Producers behind Cowboys & Aliens are sticking with original plans and are now looking for a new lead to play cowboy Zeke Jackson, the hero of the 2006 graphic novel from Platinum Studios. [SOURCE]

Robert Downey Jr has revealed that he used to hate London.
The Sherlock Holmes actor, who stars in the film alongside Jude Law, said that he was disappointed to discover he would have to move to the capital city to shoot the sleuth movie.
Downey Jr told Us Weekly: “I filmed [Chaplin] there 20 years ago and the food sucked, so I wasn’t happy at first.
“But there’s something about the work ethic and the people. Everyone had a great attitude.”
Downey Jr recently admitted that he can be a “monster” prone to “aggressive outbursts” when working on a film.

BOXING DAY sees the release of Guy Ritchie’s new interpretation of Sherlock Holmes film starring Robert Downey Jr as the detective and Jude Law as sidekick Dr Watson.
Downey Jr was previously seen in the adapation of Marvel Comics’ character Iron Man, and will reprise the role in the sequel out in May.
But, long before Tony Stark donned hi-tech armour to become Iron Man, Sherlock was a pioneer in the superhero genre, says the actor.
He said: “He was, and probably still is, one of the most recognisable icons on Earth, so much so that a lot of people actually thought that Sherlock Holmes was a real person. The more you look into Arthur Conan Doyle’s books, the more you see what a rich character Sherlock Holmes is.
“He’s very adept at so many things: he plays violin, he’s a martial artist, a boxer, an expert single stick fighter and a swordsman of sorts. He has a strong moral code in helping good guys catch bad guys, so he has dedicated his life to being a consulting detective. He doesn’t do it to show everyone how smart he is, or that he has figured everything else out when they haven’t; he’s actually a crusader.
“He was probably the first superhero, an intellectual superhero”, he said. (more…)
Robert Downey Jr has revealed he enjoyed teaming up with Jude Law to play the “love affair of sorts” between Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson.
The duo star in Guy Ritchie’s modern interpretation of Conan Doyle’s novels, and act like an old married couple at times.
Robert, who plays Sherlock, said: “It’s so funny though, because usually I’m used to people saying ‘You and this actress had great chemistry’ and they’re talking about Jude and me like we should be doing romantic comedy together – this film is not a comedy, it’s a love affair of sorts.”
The 44-year-old said he felt he and Jude were “a good team”.
And he went on: “Guy created such a sublime atmosphere on set and we weren’t sure it was going to turn out as well as it did, but we really worked at it.”
Robert revealed he felt confident taking on the iconic character.
“Sometimes you just feel like you’re in the right groove and you feel the history and the legacy of something,” he said.
“You feel like you’re being silently approved of from some place in time and there were times when we were so locked in to [the original] exactly as Doyle expressed it.”

When Iron Man’s Robert Downey Jr. and gorgeous Jude Law took on the roles of famous sleuth Sherlock Holmes and his side-kick and pal Dr. Watson, they knew they’d have to hit it off to create the chemistry needed for the tight friendship the two famous characters share.
We cornered the duo recently to get their take on their Sherlock Holmes roles and their close relationship….
How did you two create the chemistry between Watson and Sherlock?
Jude: We started work the minute we met.
Robert: Yes. The second we met, we just started bouncing ideas off each other. We were very much on the same page; a pretty eccentric page. We really worked as a team to do justice to these characters and their friendship.
They are talking about Jude and I and “chemistry” as if we should be doing romantic comedies or something. I think Holmes and Watson are aspects of all of us. We were just a good team. Jude has a huge intellect and love of the game.
Jude: I wanted to bring a yin to Holmes’s yang. Robert and I talked a lot about how we would balance out each other’s characters so that, together, they make a perfect whole. Their friendship is deeply rooted but there is a part of Holmes that infuriates Watson and vice-versa.
Robert, to you, what is Sherlock Holmes really like? (more…)
