“Iron Man 3″ is set to take over the roaring Hall H at on Saturday evening (July 14), but ahead of that, filmmaker Shane Black, executive producer Kevin Feige and leading men Robert Downey Jr. and Don Cheadle assembled together for a more intimate question-and-answer session with members of the press all about their upcoming super-flick.
Kicking things off, the panelists were asked if there was pressure to try and make a bigger film in size and scope than “Marvel’s The Avengers.” Both Feige and Black said they weren’t “aiming for bigger,” but something “different, fresh and new.”
“There’s an idea about being big, but it’s an idea about capturing and redoubling the intensity of ‘Avengers,’ that lightning in a bottle feel of stuffing so much into a limited space,” said Black. “Robert refers to it as leaving it all on the field. That’s what we’re aiming to do.” The director added that Marvel is allowing him to “take some risks” with “Iron Man 3,” which is “pretty admirable in a superhero movie, to take some risks.”
Stories like this just remind me of why I’m such a big fan in the first place! Earlier today, July 14th, Robert Downey, Jr. – The King of Comic-Con – surprised a bunch of young fans at the annual convention. The kids were there to partake in an Iron Man-themed costume contest, only to have Robert show up. Check out a detailed account of the occurrence by ComicBook.com:
Everyone knew that Robert Downey Jr. was likely to show up in San Diego today for the Marvel Studios Panel at Comic-Con. However, what came as a big surprise is that Robert Downey Jr. showed up early as a surprise guest at the Iron Man 3 Kids’ Costume Event.
The Iron Man 3 Kids’ Costume Event was a Marvel sponsored event at Comic-Con for children ages 2-14 to dress up like Iron Man. Participating kids were promised a poster autographed by Robert Downey, Jr.
What they wound up getting was also a chance to meet Robert Downey Jr. himself. The kids were all lined up on stage and asked to yell out “Iron Man,” when suddenly a familiar voice said, “Did I hear my name?” The kids and crowd then went wild as Robert Downey Jr. strolled out. And nice guy that he is, Robert Downey Jr. stuck around for awhile, leading the kids in an Iron Man cheer and talking personally with many of them.
Marvel has released new concept art for Iron Man 3, illustrated by Ryan Meinerding. Depicting Tony Stark half-dressed in his armor, it appears he’s in a bit of a jam while faced with machine-gun wielding soldiers. If you’re lucky enough to be attending Comic-Con this year, be sure to stop by the Marvel booth: they’ll be handing out prints of this artwork.
Additionally, for fans in North Carolina, some filming information for IM3 has been released via Facebook. They’ll be filming on location in Wilmington, NC on July 9th, if you’re interested in stopping by to check out some movie magic in person. (If you take some pictures and want to donate them to the site, I’ll publish them with full credit back to you.) Check out details below:
Iron Man 3 will be filming on location July 9th in Wilmington, N.C.
For the past couple of weeks Robert Downey, Jr. and the crew of Iron Man 3 have been keeping a low profile and mostly filming in studio, but that will change next week when they are scheduled to spend another day filming on location in Wilmington, N.C.
“Caged,” aka Iron Man 3, is expected to film scenes at 1223 N. 23rd Street in Wilmington on July 9, 2012 from 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m.
Wow! If you haven’t yet watched “New Life,” directed by Davis Factor and starring Robert and Susan Downey, please make sure to give the video a look ASAP. It’s a beautiful look at their transition into becoming new parents together. They talk about the harmonies of their life, and the perfect balance of their relationship together. It’s incredibly touching and shot in such a breathtaking way. Very inspirational, and so nice to see the two of them being such tranquil yet exciting (then-)future parents. Enjoy!
