Robert and Artist Tobias Keene Talk About 20-Year-Long Friendship

by Kristina • 2 CommentsArticles, Gallery

On a recent afternoon in Los Angeles, Robert Downey Jr. swings by Tobias Keene’s downtown art studio to catch up with his best friend of almost two decades.

Over plates of arugula salad with grilled chicken and wheat-free cupcakes—the actor doesn’t eat gluten—the two men, who haven’t seen each other in a few months, joke and chide like teenage boys. Both have a lot to laugh about these days, given their humbling, not-so-glamorous pasts.

Keene, 48, who moved here from England in 1988, has come a long way from sweeping floors at a Beverly Hills hair salon. Today, he is a figurative painter whose work evokes a wide range of styles from Thomas Gainsborough to Francis Bacon. This spring, he’ll have a solo show at LeBasse Projects in Los Angeles.

  1. Robert I have been a fan since the first film I saw you in, Weird Science. I am so happy for You and Susan, to hear that you are expecting; I was just thinking earlier today (after starting a Twitter account the other day, and trying to see if there was a way to contact You directly) I wondered If and when You and Your Wife would have a Baby, so It was ironic that I read it in this article. I really just wanted to say that I am really and genuinely Happy for you, that You found Susan and are married, expecting, succesful and content! Im glad You found Your other half and that it seems that everything has come full circle! My Prayers are with You Both! God Bless You & Yours, Happy Holidays and Congratulations!!!!!
